How do you balance radiators?
Balancing your radiators ensures even heat distribution throughout your home. To do it correctly, follow these simple steps:
- Switch off your central heating and wait for your radiators to cool down.
- Bleed each radiator in preparation for balancing.
- Open each radiator valve using a radiator key or valve handle. You can do this by turning it anticlockwise.
- Turn the heating back on and wait for each radiator to warm back up.
- Starting with the radiator closest to your boiler, begin to close the lockshield valve more than the next radiator. This valve is opposite the on/off valve on the side of your radiator.
- Using a thermometer, continue checking the inlet and outlet of each radiator, aiming for around a 12°C difference between each.
- Adjust each lockshield valve to restrict flow to radiators that heat up too quickly while opening up the valve on radiators that are slower.
- Fine-tune each until all radiators heat evenly.
