Colour zoning

Colour zoning is where you use a painted block of colour to create a defined area in a room. It can simply help you to draw extra attention to your favourite things or do something specific like create a dining, study or relaxing space. It’s a brilliant thing to do in an open plan living room and makes it much more interesting and personal to be in. Think about the way you want to feel or what you want to do in your zone and choose colours that enhance it. Use greens for relaxed spaces in which you gather with friends and family, blues for spaces of creativity and study and warm pinks, yellows and reds for spaces where you want to create a cosy welcoming atmosphere.

Top tips

  • Take the colour up onto the ceiling to make the zone even more interesting, intimate and enclosed. Perfect for over a dining table or bed
  • Mark out the zone with coloured children’s chalk, then use a spirit level and decorator's low tack masking tape to create neat straight lines on your colour blocks

Painted ceiling

Get the look

The ceiling is the fifth wall in a room and adding colour to it is a game changer when it comes to decorating. It creates a completely different atmosphere in a room and changes it from being a simple box into a design statement. If you combine the colour on the ceiling with a classic pale neutral on the walls, it frees up the walls for you to display lots of different styles or artwork and accessories, plus it makes all rooms appear wider and more spacious.

Top tips

  • Take the colour on the ceiling down onto the walls. If you have a picture rail, use this as your guide, but if you haven’t got one, use low tack decorator;s masking tape to create one. Up to a 25cm band is ideal, but make it shallower in smaller rooms and deeper in bigger ones

  • For smaller spaces, use pale tones of colour on the ceiling and combine with whites and off whites. For larger rooms, try mid-toned colours and team with pale neutrals

Colour drenching

Get the look

Colour drenching a room is when you paint all the surfaces, including the walls ceiling and woodwork, in the same colour. It creates an elegant seamless look that also makes life so much easier when it comes to decorating, because the lines between each element of the room don’t have to be perfect, but the results make you look like you are a pro. Most people think that colour drenching is all about using dark colours, but the best results can be achieved with pale and mid tone colours like Coastal Grey and Knotted Twine. They give you a fully immersive wrap-around look without making a room appear smaller and hemmed in.

Top tips

  • Start your decorating with the ceiling colour and work down towards the skirting boards. Use Dulux Easycare matt emulsion for the walls and ceiling, and a Dulux quick drying gloss, satinwood or eggshell for the woodwork and skirting boards

  • Use a good quality roller handle and sleeve on a roller pole to make the job quicker and easier, and a good quality synthetic 2” brush for the cutting in and woodwork
