How to remove and replace stair spindles

Use a screwdriver or drill to remove any screws or fasteners securing the old spindles. Nails might also be removable using a claw head hammer that can grip the top of the nail. Once the fasteners are removed, carefully pull the old spindles out of their positions.

Measure the length and mark the angle of the new spindles, using the old ones as a guide. If necessary, cut the new spindles to size using a saw. Sand the cut ends to ensure a smooth finish.

Apply wood glue to the bottom of each spindle and insert them equally spaced apart into the baserail of the bannister and underside of the handrail. Ensure the spindles are aligned properly and seated securely.

Once all the new spindles are in place, use small screws, nails, tacks or fasteners to secure them to the stair treads and handrail. Make sure the spindles are firmly attached and there is no wobbling.

You can now paint or stain the new spindles to match the rest of the staircase. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the staircase.
